In science and engineering, the weight of an object is the force acting on the object due to gravity. However, in common parlance, “weight” often refers to mass. This converter handles units commonly used for both (like Kilograms for mass and Pounds which can be force or mass depending on context, but usually mass in daily trade).

Weight & Mass Units Explained

  • Kilogram (kg): The base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). It is widely used in science, engineering, and commerce worldwide.
  • Gram (g): Equal to 1/1000th of a kilogram.
  • Milligram (mg): Equal to 1/1000th of a gram. Used in medicine and pharmacy.
  • Tonne (t): A metric unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms.
  • Pound (lb): A unit of mass used in the imperial and US customary systems. One pound is legally defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.
  • Ounce (oz): A unit of mass equal to 1/16th of a pound.

Fun Fact: Until 2019, the kilogram was defined by a physical artifact known as the “International Prototype of the Kilogram” (Big K), a cylinder of platinum-iridium kept in a vault in France. It is now defined by the Planck constant.
