Time is the indefinite continued progress of existence and events that occur in an apparently irreversible succession from the past, through the present, into the future. It is a component quantity of various measurements used to sequence events.

Time Units Explained

  • Second (s): The base unit of time in the International System of Units (SI). Historically defined as 1/86400 of a day.
  • Minute (min): A unit of time usually equal to 60 seconds.
  • Hour (h): A unit of time conventionally reckoned as 1/24 of a day and scientifically reckoned as 3,599-3,601 seconds, depending on conditions.
  • Day (d): Examples include the apparent solar day (sunrise to sunrise) or mean solar day (average length of a solar day).
  • Year (yr): The orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun.

Fun Fact: A “jiffy” is an actual unit of time! In computing, it’s often 1/100th of a second, but in physics, it can refer to the time it takes light to travel one centimeter.
