Frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time. It is also referred to as temporal frequency, which emphasizes the contrast to spatial frequency and angular frequency. Frequency is measured in units of hertz (Hz) which is equal to one occurrence of a repeating event per second.
Frequency Units Explained
- Hertz (Hz): The SI unit of frequency, defined as one cycle per second.
- Kilohertz (kHz): Equal to 1,000 Hz. AM radio broadcasts are measured in kHz.
- Megahertz (MHz): Equal to 1,000,000 Hz. FM radio and computer processor speeds (historically) are measured in MHz.
- Gigahertz (GHz): Equal to 1,000,000,000 Hz. Modern CPU speeds and Wi-Fi signals operate in the GHz range.
- RPM (Revolutions per minute): A unit of frequency of rotation: the number of turns in one minute. It is a unit of rotational speed or the frequency of rotation around a fixed axis.
[!TIP]
Fun Fact: In music, the standard tuning pitch is A4 = 440 Hz. This means the A string above middle C vibrates back and forth 440 times every single second.
